Zooplankton is a Sustainable Aquatic Protein Source

A New Venture is Starting Early in 2008

An Investment in Sustainable Aquafarming

Australia is a relatively small aquaculture nation with a total aquaculture production at $2.3 billion AUD in 2003-2004. However, like all other western nations Australia relies almost entirely on pelleted diets for aquaculture production.

Current figures are sketchy but it is believed finfish and crustaceans make up 70% of total Australian Aquaculture production. If pellet diets make up 40% of the market price then it can be assumed that Australia uses approximately $2.3 billion x 0.7 x 0.4 = $644 million AUD in pelleted diets annually.

Fish Meal sells for approximately, $1.50 per kilogram and makes up about 40% of pelleted diets. Australia inports approximately $260 million dollars worth of processed fish meal annually and that is the proposed target market.

Processed or dried zooplankton can be manufactured at approximately 800kg per hectare per day.

If aquatic protein were culture on a farm and 50% of the culture days per year were lost to the elements then the annual production for a pond the size of a football field would be 146 tonnes of sustainable aquatic protein yield. If zooplankton were sold at half the price of fish meal ($0.75) then one pond would generate $109,500 gross return per annum. What if there were 25 ponds? But none of these statements have been proven, yet.

Sustainable Aquatic Protein (Zooplankton)

Known Factors on Zooplankton Aquafarming Potential

Fish Meal harvesting of the sea must stop. The yield and cost are now unsustainable

Zooplankton is the basis of all aquatic protein food chain integrity on the planet

Zooplankton can be cultured and harvested at 2.5 tonnes per day per hectare (wet weight)

Zooplankton can be cultured from waste nutrients and industrial bi-products

Zooplankton has all the essential protein components to provide a commercial substitute for fish meal
